How Can You Compare the Difference between Nursing Care & Assisted Living?

This is one of the big questions many seniors and their families face as those twilight years creep in and the reality of needing some kind of care during the senior years has to be addressed.

In making a decision to move a parent into a care facility, many are not sure whether to choose a nursing home or an assisted living facility. What are the differences between the two?

This useful graphic from the Skilled Nursing Facilities Organization gives an easy overview of some of the typical differences between Nursing Homes and Assisted Living, including the costs of nursing homes vs assisted living facilities, the range of medical and care services available and the number of places that are available.

Social Security Increases for Senior Americans

Social Security checks for senior Americans are set to have their first increase in three years. However, the 3.6% increase will not even meet the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) and really will not make up for ground lost over the last few years.

According to the report on InvestorPlace today “Senior Citizens Should Be Furious About So-Called Social Security ‘Increase’”, the average monthly increase for seniors will be $43 a month. With the increasing cost of inflation, gas price increases and rising Medicare costs, although the 3.6% increase may be well-intentioned to appease older voters, it will do little to ease the lives of elderly people.

Powering Up With Bio Fuel Cells – A New Era for Medical Implants?

It may all sound like something out of the ‘Matrix‘, but the BBC today reports on new developments emerging out of Switzerland that could revolutionize our use of artificial organs and prosthetics.

Bio Fuel cell technology is not completely new, but the progress made by Dr Serge Cosnier and his team at the Joseph Fourier University of Grenoble have moved us a huge leap forward in how the human body can be used to generate electricity.

Their gadget, called a biofuel cell, uses glucose and oxygen at concentrations found in the body to generate electricity.

The team at University of Grenoble are the first in the world to demonstrate their device working whilst implanted in a living animal. This could mean that, within a decade or two, biofuel cells could be used to power a range of medical implants, from sensors and drug delivery devices to entire artificial organs. All you will need to do to power them up is eat a candy bar, or drink a coke.

The Biofuel cell technology could launch a whole revolution in artificial organs and prosthetics, and would transform tens of thousands of lives every year.

Could there be a link between lack of sleep and Alzheimer’s?

A new study has suggested that there could be an intrinsic link between sleep deprivation and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

The new research has been conducted by the Sleep Medicine Center at Washington University and Dr. Stephen Duntley, a professor of neurology and director of the Sleep Center, says that “prolonged sleep disruption can actually play an important role in the pathological processes that underlie diseases.” The results were published online prior to the publication of the latest edition of ‘Archives of Neurology’.

Although the connection to Alzheimer’s has not been proved in humans, the research is significant in how we can begin to understand what happens in the brain with biological markers.

The research looked at levels of amyloid beta, a by-product of brain activity, that is recognized as a bio-marker for Alzheimer’s. The levels of amyloid beta rise during the day and fall at night. In healthy people, levels of amyloid beta drop to their lowest point about six hours after sleep, and return to their highest point six hours after maximum wakefulness. Sleep allows the amyloid beta to be flushed through the spinal fluid, so lack of sleep or significantly disrupted sleep, may hinder the natural flow of amyloid beta.

More extensive research is required and much of the findings are still speculation, however, this is tantalizing evidence that better sleep could be helpful in reducing Alzheimer’s disease risk.

Elderly People Missing Out on up to £200 per Month in Attendance Allowance

Attendance Allowance (AA) is a tax-free benefit for ill and disabled people over-65, but according to latest figures and as reported recently by The Guardian, many that should be receiving it are missing out on this valuable additional allowance.

Age UK claim that many elderly people do not claim it as they have misconceptions about what they can claim for. The allowance is paid based upon the help people need to look after themselves, not on the support they currently get.

Up to £73.60 is payable weekly for severe cases, and the attendance allowance is aimed at helping elderly and infirm people stay independent in their own homes. It can be used towards paying for home help services, general household repairs and maintenance or mobility additions to a home.

The allowance will typically be awarded if you qualify for assistance with things like bathing, dressing and moving around. It is awarded if your health requires constant supervision for your own welfare.

Attendance Allowance is paid at two weekly rates – £49.30 for those who needs some assistance with personal care during the daytime or overnight, and £73.60 for those who need full-time supervision.

Currently approximately 1 million UK residents claim the higher rate, whilst about 800,000 claim the lower rate.

If you think you may qualify for Attendance Allowance, you can call the inquiry line on 0800 88 22 00 or start a claim online.

Driving Miss Daisy: How Can We Address the Mobility Crisis Threatening Our Seniors?

America is often described as a “car nation”, it has grown since the 1950’s around it’s love of the automobile and it’s Interstate network. In the U.S. as the automobile industry boomed and substantial federal funding invested in an infrastructure that connected people across it’s vast nation – we all became heavily dependent on the automobile.

This reliance on the automobile can become debilitating for seniors when their ability to drive can diminish or be lost altogether. Americans who have relied solely on their automobile suddenly have to adapt to new means of transportation at an age when change does not necessarily come easily!

According to demographic researchers, only a small percentage of Americans actually move after retirement age, meaning that most Americans “age in place”, remaining in their neighborhood where most daily activities still require car trips.

With the onslaught of the retiring baby boomer generation, this means millions of Americans will be facing retirement and will need more affordable transportation options to get around their local neighborhoods. Many will rely upon family and friends to offer lifts, some will move to retirement communities, where services are all close by. But what of those seniors who remain in their home, in the neighborhood they have lived in all their life? In order for them to not become isolated, in order for them to still be able to access services, grocery shop and take part in other activities, they are going need a reliable, safe and affordable public transport system.

A study in 2004 found that of those seniors over 65 years who no longer drove, 65% made fewer trips to visit friends and family, 59% made fewer trips to the store or to eat out and 15% made fewer trips to their physician, than driving seniors of the same age.

Even for those seniors who are still capable of driving, the rising cost of gas is threatening to reduce their capability to travel independently.

Transportation for America (T4 America) is a coalition working on transportation reform for the United States. Their mission is to create a bold new vision for our transportation network, something that has not been significantly updated since the 1950’s.

In order to examine the emerging issues for our aging Americans, T4 America commissioned the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) to analyze public transportation in 241 metro areas. The study analyzed the number of public transit lines, stops, bus routes and rail and ferry stations in each location, in addition to the number of seniors living in the area. In short the results of this research indicated that over 11.5 million Americans aged over 65 are living in “poor” transit access areas. With the baby boomer age wave and seniors choosing to “age in place”, it is estimated that by 2015 over 15.5 million older Americans will be faced with declining mobility options.

The mobility scooter market is already on the incline, with more elderly Americans opting to buy or rent an electric mobility scooter in order to improve their mobility options as they “age in place”. This presents a whole new challenge for local government in addressing the health and safety of our seniors out and about on mobility scooters. It is also means that any improvements to public transportation systems must take into account the needs of mobility scooter users.

The mobility scooter is giving many aged Americans a new lease of independence as the electric scooter provides an easy and affordable means to get around locally. Mobility scooters are available in all shapes and sizes, both portable and heavyweight, and these days there are also numerous options for acquiring one.
For more information on finding the best mobility scooter visit US Mobility.

A report conducted by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) named “Maturing of America II” found that transportation issues have become a great concern for communities across the states, and now ranks as the second highest concern for local governments below financial issues.

A 2002 study in the American Journal of Public Health found that a typical American makes 3.4 trips per day, indicating the huge impact for many of those driving baby boomers that become unable to continue to drive.

If you would like to learn more about how “aging in place” is likely to affect our senior population, then you can read more at T4 America in their Seniors Mobility Crisis Report.

Senior Care Could Boost Employment Opportunities

Working wihtin the senior care industry has been seen as the most lucrative, or preferred career choice. Historically, it has been associated with low-pay and unsocial hours, and has been the work of choice for many an immigrant worker.

However, the ‘age-wave’ that is descending upon the western world may change our perception of the senior care profession. It is predicted that employment in his industry will grow by 50% over the next few years.

It is already offering nursing home and homecare care giver job opportunities to many over 45′s who have had to seek alternative employment, or retired but still need a supplemental income.

In addition, it appears that even younger entrepreneurs are now choosing to move into the senior care industry.
